Why More Women Are Getting Pregnant on Ozempic
A growing number of women are reporting unplanned pregnancies while using popular weight-loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro—prompting a serious public health warning in the UK.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued its first-ever public alert on the connection between weight-loss medications and contraception. The warning follows 40 Pregnancy-related reports linked to these medications, which work by mimicking gut hormones that suppress appetite and slow digestion.
Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, while Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, and Saxenda contains liraglutide. Though often referred to as “weight-loss injections,” not all of these are officially approved for weight management. Some, like Ozempic, were developed to treat type 2 diabetes but have gained traction for their slimming effects.
These medications slow the digestive process, helping people feel full longer and eat less. But that slower digestion may also interfere with how oral contraceptives are absorbed in the body—particularly with tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro.
According to the MHRA, Mounjaro may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives in people with higher BMIs. Of the 40 Pregnancy-related cases reported, 26 were linked to Mounjaro, while 8 involved semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) and 9 involved liraglutide (Saxenda). Two reports specifically indicated the pregnancies were unintentional.
Why Weight-Loss May Lead to Surprise Pregnancies
There are two key reasons why Pregnancy rates are increasing among users of these drugs:
- Restored fertility due to weight loss
Weight loss can improve ovulation and fertility in itself. Dr. Channa Jayasena, a consultant in reproductive endocrinology, explained that women with obesity who lose weight using GLP?1 drugs become more likely to conceive, even if they struggled with infertility before. - Interference with birth control
GLP?1 drugs like Mounjaro slow gastric emptying, which can lead to reduced absorption of the pill, particularly when starting the medication or changing dosages. This makes standard birth control pills less reliable without a backup method.
In response, the MHRA now advises that:
Women using Mounjaro and on oral contraceptives should add a barrier method, such as condoms, for at least 4 weeks after starting or increasing the dose.
Those planning to become pregnant should stop the drugs well in advance:
- Semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy): Wait at least 2 months before trying to conceive.
- Tirzepatide (Mounjaro): Wait 1 month after stopping.
- Liraglutide (Saxenda): Discontinue before attempting Pregnancy.
These medications should not be taken during Pregnancy, while trying to get pregnant, or while breastfeeding, due to a lack of safety data.
Dr. Alison Cave, the MHRA’s chief safety officer, emphasized that these drugs are not cosmetic treatments and are only approved for specific medical uses. “They are not a quick fix,” she said. “They haven’t been assessed for safety when used as a way to lose weight for appearance’s sake.”
A quick search of Facebook for “Ozempic babies” finds dozens of women sharing surprise Pregnancy stories after taking the drug for weight loss. Many believed they were protected by birth control or assumed Pregnancy was unlikely due to past fertility issues, only to discover later they were expecting.
These firsthand accounts are adding to concerns among healthcare professionals who say that as more people use these medications, awareness of their impact on fertility and contraception must grow too.
Dr. Jayasena notes that while we still don’t know exactly how harmful these drugs might be during Pregnancy, it’s better to be cautious. “Other forms of weight loss, like bariatric surgery, have been linked to increased miscarriage risk,” he explained. “So women are advised to do all they can to prevent Pregnancy while taking GLP?1 drugs.”
Prof. Ying Cheong, a reproductive medicine specialist, agrees. She told The Guardian that more public education is needed: “Weight loss improves fertility, and medications that delay gastric emptying may also delay or reduce contraceptive effectiveness. That combination can lead to unintentional pregnancies.”
Bottom Line for Women Using GLP?1 Medications
If you’re taking Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Saxenda, and not actively trying to conceive:
- Use reliable contraception—and consider adding a barrier method, especially with Mounjaro.
- Talk to your healthcare provider about a backup birth control plan.
- Don’t assume you’re infertile because of past issues with weight.
- Stop the medication well in advance if planning to get pregnant.
- Never use GLP?1 medications during Pregnancy or while breastfeeding.
While these medications are proving to be effective tools for managing weight and type 2 diabetes, they are not without risk—especially when it comes to reproductive health. This new guidance from the MHRA is a reminder that even “miracle drugs” require close medical oversight and clear communication around family planning.
